Types of Drilling Rigs and Structures

Sep. 16, 23

Drilling rigs and structures are essential equipment in the oil and gas industry, mining, geothermal exploration, and other fields that require subsurface drilling. They come in various types and structures, each designed for specific drilling methods, depths, and terrains. Below are some of the common types of drilling rigs and structures:

Onshore Drilling Rigs:

  • Conventional Drilling Rigs: These are versatile rigs used for drilling shallow to moderately deep wells. They consist of a derrick, drawworks, mast, and other components for drilling and lifting operations.

  • Mobile Drilling Rigs: Mobile rigs are designed for easy transportation between drilling locations. They can be truck-mounted, trailer-mounted, or crawler-mounted.

  • Truck-Mounted Rigs: These rigs are mounted on trucks for mobility and are suitable for drilling in remote or difficult-to-reach areas.

  • Skid-Mounted Rigs: These rigs are mounted on a skid frame for quick setup and teardown. They are often used for drilling temporary wells.

  • Tender-Assisted Drilling Rigs: These rigs are stationed on a platform and use a separate tender vessel for accommodation and logistical support.

Offshore Drilling Rigs:

  • Jack-up Rigs: These rigs have extendable legs that can reach the seafloor. They are used in shallow waters and can be towed to different locations.

  • Semi-Submersible Rigs: Semi-submersible rigs float on the water surface and are partially submerged. They offer stability in rough seas and are used in deepwater drilling.

  • Drillships: Drillships are ships with drilling equipment onboard. They are used for deepwater drilling and can be dynamically positioned.

  • Submersible Rigs: These rigs are fully submerged and rest on the seafloor. They are used for ultra-deepwater drilling.

  • Fixed Platform Rigs: Fixed platforms are structures permanently anchored to the seabed. They house drilling equipment for shallow water drilling.

Directional Drilling Rigs:

  • Horizontal Drilling Rigs: These rigs are used to drill horizontally into the reservoir from a vertical wellbore. They maximize contact with the reservoir, increasing productivity.

  • Directional Drilling Rigs: These rigs can drill at various angles to reach specific targets. They are commonly used for accessing reservoirs under challenging geological conditions.

Geothermal Drilling Rigs:

  • Geothermal Drill Rigs: These rigs are designed for drilling geothermal wells to tap into heat stored within the Earth's crust. They require specialized equipment to handle the high temperatures encountered.

Mining Drilling Rigs:

  • Blasthole Drilling Rigs: These rigs are used in mining operations to drill holes for explosives used in blasting rock.

  • Exploration Drilling Rigs: Exploration rigs are used to collect core samples and data for geological analysis in mining projects.

Cable Tool Drilling Rigs:

  • Cable Tool Rigs: Also known as percussion rigs, these rigs use a heavy drill bit attached to a cable to break rock formations. They are commonly used for water well drilling.

Rotary Drilling Rigs:

  • Rotary Table Rigs: These rigs use a rotary table to turn the drill string. They are suitable for both onshore and offshore drilling.

  • Top Drive Rigs: Top drive rigs use a motorized system to rotate the drill string. They offer more control and are commonly used in deepwater drilling.

These are just a few examples of the many types of drilling rigs and structures available. Each type is designed to meet specific drilling requirements, operational challenges, and geological conditions. The choice of rig depends on factors such as drilling method, target depth, terrain, and the resources being extracted.
