Things You Should Know about Drilling Rig

Oct. 26, 21

There are many factors that go into choosing the right water well drilling rig. There are three main things to talk about with your manufacturer partner: location, well specifications, and drilling methods.

1. Location

Location includes the local laws and regulations required to access the site with equipment and how the well must be legally constructed. The location also includes knowing the drilling conditions underground and above ground. Drillers need to know the formations they must drill through to keep the borehole open to the well. This often presents unique challenges, requiring multiple drilling methods to complete a well. On the surface, the superintendent drillers need to consider the altitude and extremely hot or cold weather conditions that may affect rig performance.

2. Well specifications

The well specification is the outline of the borehole, including the diameter and total depth (TD) required to complete the well. When selecting a drilling rig, this will influence the decision on a compressor or mud pump to ensure a sufficient diversion rate to remove the drill cuttings from the hole. The depth of the hole will also determine the weight of the string weight after the TD has been reached. The rig selected must have sufficient pullback capacity to lift and retrieve the entire tubular weight from the borehole.

3. Drilling methods

The drilling method chosen will be determined by what is known about the first two categories. This information will allow you to select different options such as whether to use air or mud, rotary drilling or submersible hammer (DTH), cable tool drilling, or hydraulic rotary drilling. It also affects other drilling decisions, including how the drill column is composed and the type of bit used.

Once the driller understands the extensive requirements the rig will face in its application, they can choose the rig that offers flexibility.

What are some common oversights that customers make when choosing a rig?

Drillers sometimes overlook the need to plan for future opportunities. Having the right rig to handle a variety of jobs can help drillers expand their business or take on additional work if the main business activity slows down. In addition, drills should remember to check the type and level of support offered by the manufacturer. Another key item to prioritize is the resale value of the rig.

What is the potential impact of a multi-purpose rig?

A multi-purpose rig can expand the market in which a divisional drill can participate. It allows a divisional drill to perform conventional drilling one day and then submerged reverse or RC/corer work the next. It can also help reduce the total cost of ownership by having one rig that can do both jobs. Rather than having one RC rig start drilling and then having to remove it to bring in a second coring rig to complete the hole, the rig can keep the multifunctional rig on the hole and complete the entire hole pattern by switching between RC and coring.
