What Are Drilling Rigs Used for?

A drilling rig is mechanical equipment for drilling boreholes on the earth’s surface. Large drilling rig assemblies are equipped with full supporting components for constructing water wells, natural gas extraction wells and oil wells.

A wide range of drilling rig types are available, and model selection depends entirely on on-site geological construction requirements. Below are the mainstream drilling rig classifications.

Land-Based Drilling Rig

Land-based drilling rigs are the most widely adopted equipment for mineral and water well exploration. Modern land rigs feature compact structure and higher operating efficiency compared with early traditional models.

Slim Hole Drilling Rig

Slim hole drilling rigs are far more compact than conventional drilling equipment, with a volume reduction of over 50% in most cases. They generate less rock cuttings during drilling and occupy a smaller construction footprint. However, slim hole rigs cannot adapt to all complex geological environments.

Coiled Tubing Drill Rig

Conventional drilling operations adopt rigid drill pipes to form drill strings, while coiled tubing rigs replace segmented rigid pipes with continuous coiled tubing. This design reduces site occupation and drilling waste output, making it ideal for ecologically sensitive areas, and it is mainly used for well re-entry work.

Jackup Drill Rigs

Jackup rigs are designed for shallow water operations with water depth less than 300 feet. They consist of floating barges equipped with liftable support legs for stabilizing the drilling platform. Jackup units are towed to designated marine locations; their rigid structure resists strong ocean waves and storms. With convenient relocation capability and outstanding durability, they deliver high cost performance for shallow sea projects.

Semi-Submersible Rigs

Semi-submersible drilling platforms are applied for marine drilling in waters deeper than 300 feet, relying on buoyant floating structures to maintain stable operation.

This platform type adapts to a wide range of marine depths. It can be fixed to the seabed via steel cables and chains, or maintain positioning without anchors through dynamic positioning systems during drilling.

Drill Ship

Drill ships serve ultra-deep offshore exploration projects, capable of drilling boreholes in seawater up to 10,000 feet deep. The floating drill vessel can be anchored to the seabed, or adopt dynamic positioning technology to keep stationary without anchor systems during construction.
